Note: ETFO AQ is reviewing the revised Kindergarten curriculum and updating AQ course content in alignment with Ontario College of Teachers guidelines. Instructors will share relevant updates as they become available.
The Kindergarten Curriculum 2026, which includes new expectations in literacy, mathematics, coding, and foundational skills, will take effect in the 2026 – 27 school year and replace the Kindergarten Program 2016, which remains in effect for the current school year.
This course is the first of a three session specialist Additional Qualification. Kindergarten Part 1 is for educators interested in updating their skills or enhancing their professional knowledge about effective practice with children aged 3.5 – 6 years. This course asks educators to explore theoretical foundations, the development of young children, program planning and implementation, assessment, the learning environment and ethical considerations related to teaching and learning in the early years. Candidates will gain new knowledge and will refine their teaching practice in order to promote learning opportunities that are play-based, differentiated, empowering, and integral to the development of young children. An emphasis will be placed on the importance of collaborative partnerships with families and other early years professionals.
